If you’re an avid Reddit user who prefers browsing on a mobile browser rather than the Reddit app, you’ve probably encountered a persistent and frustrating popup. This popup appears when you try to view more comments without being logged in, urging you to sign in or register. Unlike Google’s login prompts, this particular popup is directly from Reddit, which you can verify by checking the links within it.
The Problem
Previously, I created a post on blocking Reddit’s nagging prompts to open links in the app using an annoyance-blocking list in uBlock Origin. However, Reddit introduced yet another obstacle: the ‘Log in to view the conversation’ popup. This appears whenever you tap ‘View More Comments’ on a mobile browser while not being logged in. Unfortunately, there is very little information online on how to remove it, apart from a few user complaints and unsuccessful attempts to block it using uBlock’s picker tool.
Failed Attempts to Block the Popup
Some Reddit users suggested using a custom uBlock filter to block elements related to Google accounts. While adding this filter removes the ‘Continue with Google’ button, it does not eliminate the entire popup. Interestingly, I noticed that this issue does not appear on my desktop browser, even when using incognito mode or changing the user agent to mimic a mobile browser. The only difference? My mobile browser lacked the Fanboy Annoyance list, which I attempted to add—but unfortunately, it didn’t solve the issue either.
The Solution
After several attempts, I decided to revisit uBlock Origin’s picker tool. While it was difficult to use in portrait mode, switching my mobile browser (Firefox) to landscape mode made it much easier to select the correct element. Using the picker tool, I successfully created a custom filter that blocks the popup entirely.
Now, I can tap ‘View More Comments’ on Reddit all day long without ever encountering the login prompt, even when not signed in.
Steps to Fix the Issue
If you’re facing the same problem, follow these steps:
Ensure you have uBlock Origin installed on your mobile browser.
Try adding the Fanboy Annoyance List to uBlock’s filter lists (though it didn’t work for me, it may help in your case).
Use uBlock Origin’s picker tool:
Switch your browser to landscape mode.
Select the popup element carefully.
Create a custom filter based on the selected element.
Apply the custom filter and enjoy an uninterrupted Reddit browsing experience!
Final Thoughts
Reddit’s push toward forcing app usage or mandatory login for mobile browsing is frustrating, but thankfully, tools like uBlock Origin provide a workaround. While this fix works for now, Reddit may introduce further changes in the future. If that happens, adapting new filters or finding alternative methods will be necessary.
