Traveling in today’s world means carrying a variety of electronic devices to enhance the experience. Most travelers bring a smartphone for capturing memories, navigating new destinations, making purchases, and even filling out online forms like visa applications. Families often bring a gaming console to entertain kids, while elderly travelers may carry an eBook reader or tablet. Additionally, action cameras, drones, and even laptops have become essential travel companions.
Fortunately, modern devices have standardized charging methods. Nearly all gadgets now rely on USB charging, with the USB-C connector becoming the dominant standard. Even larger devices, such as laptops, can be charged via USB-C if they support Power Delivery. This means travelers can pack just one charger and one cable to power all their essential devices. Many hotels now provide built-in USB charging ports in wall sockets, table lamps, and desk clocks, eliminating the need to carry bulky power adapters altogether.
However, one device category still struggles with standardization: electric shavers. Many travelers prefer an electric razor over traditional wet shaving due to airport security restrictions on razors and the liquid limitations on shaving foam and aftershave. Unlike smartphones and laptops, most electric shavers use proprietary charging ports and adapters, which can be inconvenient, bulky, and incompatible with international sockets.
Charging Electric Shavers via USB
To solve this problem, I sought a way to charge my two electric shavers—a Braun Series 7 and a Philips OneBlade—using USB power. Here’s how I managed it:
Braun Series 7
The Braun Series 7 requires a 12V charger, while standard USB supplies only 5V. However, advanced USB charging protocols (such as Power Delivery) can supply 12V under the right conditions. I found a USB adapter with a plug that fits Braun shavers, designed to convert 5V USB power into 12V output using a step-up converter. Although the adapter emits some noise due to voltage conversion, it works perfectly for charging my shaver.
Philips OneBlade
Charging the Philips OneBlade was trickier. Different OneBlade models require varying voltages, including 5V, 8V, 12V, and 15V. The plugs on these models are specifically designed to prevent charging with an incompatible voltage. My OneBlade model has a NiMH battery and originally charges at 4.3V. While I could technically modify a USB cable to provide a similar voltage, I opted for a step-down adapter that converts 5V USB power into 4.3V. This solution allows me to charge my OneBlade safely without worrying about overvoltage issues.
Why This Matters for Travelers
Now, instead of carrying bulky proprietary chargers, I can charge both of my electric shavers using USB cables. This setup works not only for travel but also for daily use, including charging on the go in my car. Many men shave while driving, and unless you have an AC power inverter in your car, USB charging is the easiest way to keep your shaver powered up.
For those facing similar issues, investing in USB-compatible charging cables for shavers can simplify travel packing and reduce reliance on specific power adapters. If you’re interested in these solutions, check out the links in the description for recommended charging cables.
Final Thoughts
Standardized USB charging has significantly reduced the number of chargers and cables travelers need to carry. However, some devices—like electric shavers—still lag behind. With the right adapters, you can overcome this limitation and streamline your travel gear. Whether you’re preparing for a vacation, business trip, or daily commute, USB charging solutions can make life easier and more convenient.
